Grandparents and Technology

When we look at the world around us, we see so many almost unbelievable structures which were created by man. High rise office buildings and magnificent houses are marvels to see. Roads and bridges are remarkable. Magnificent old buildings and monuments are astonishing and beautiful. There are numerous mind-boggling sites to behold, some of which have been around for hundreds of years.

Yet one of the most amazing of all creations is the relatively new technology of this modern age. Computers have come a long way since their inception and are being constantly improved. Laptop computers, with all their varieties and variations, have taken over the world. Cell phones and all the new handheld devices perform almost every function imaginable. Cell phones and computers are able to supply all kinds of information on news, weather, restaurant locations, movie times, and places to visit. GPS systems tell you how to get anywhere you want to go. Cameras now take photos without film, and pictures are available immediately.

Incredible technology is everywhere. The true geniuses who are creating all this magnificent technology should be thanked and appreciated. Skilled engineers and inventors have been making staggering discoveries and products for generations. Now many of the real innovators in technology are young people who may have dropped out of college. Their minds were probably racing too fast to sit in a classroom listening to a teacher lecture.

Although some senior citizens, the older grandparents of today, have resisted embracing all the technology, most now use at least some of it everyday. Even elderly people are regularly checking the internet and sending emails to keep in touch with family, grandchildren, and friends. When hearing is impaired and talking on the telephone is difficult, the emails work very well. They are a way to communicate quickly and efficiently. People are enjoying staying connected through the avenues of technology.

Many grandparents are even into all or some of the social media sites which are available. Besides having email accounts which they use often, Grandparents are tweeting and using Facebook. They are sending photos and are able to see instant photos of their grandchildren.

Senior citizens who resisted using cell phones now find them a necessity for feeling secure and safe especially when they go out. They are now reachable, and they can call someone in case of an emergency. Older people have problems arise more readily than their younger counterparts, and having a cell phone is advisable. Free cell phones and service are available in some areas for senior citizens or others who may have limited income and cannot afford a regular cell phone.

Technology is amazing, and we can all take advantage of it no matter what age.

RYN Shoes with Rocker Technology are more like regular shoes than most

RYN Shoes with Rocker Technology are more like regular shoes than most

Functional footwear is the big thing of the past few years with some styles hitting the mark and others not so much. The companies who make them claim that this type of footwear improves balance, body alignment and does a number on your bum. Im not convinced about the fabulous effects these shoes will have on any ones backside, but I do see how they can benefit ones balance and Ive heard from friends that theyre back pain was reduced with a pair of functional footwear. Ive tried every shoe fromReebok EasyTone, Skechers Shape-ups, Trim Treads,Flojosand more you can find all of those reviews by clicking on the name youre interested in.The latest brand Ive sampled is RYN.

The RYN shoes I received are the black with pink sandals above and I have to say theyre less weird then most! I dont mean that as a back-handed compliment, but the fact of the matter is that some styles make folks look like Frankenstein. No one wants that, and with these RYN sandals you wont get that. The sole is a little high to support its rocker sole technology, but over all, I dont think Ive received any confused looks or comments while wearing them. The other nice thing about them is that they feel pretty normal too. In fact, Ive found them comparable in feel to my old pair of Tevas. Nice, eh?

My legs havent become sore while wearing these RYN sandals, but Im in pretty good shape. I imagine that someone who WASNT a fitness professional, may end a long day of wearing these things with a bit of calf fatigue or pain. Overall, I think RYN did a pretty nice job combining fashion, feel and function with these summer shoes. This brand would be one of my favorites so far. The only obstacle to everyone having RYN shoes is the price. The cost of a pair ranges from $245 $300.

Wingsuit Base Jumping and Technology Rollouts

February 17th, 2012

Wingsuit Base Jumping and Technology Rollouts

Wingsuit BASE jumping is one of the most extreme and dangerous sports out there. With its mechanics similar to those of a flying squirrel, a wingsuit jumper has an average forward speed of 100 mph thats 146 feet per second and would clear a football field in under 2.5 seconds. Participants must carefully prepare for their jump keeping in mind that though they will fly through the air like a bird, they are falling towards the earth at around 50 mph. This is like jumping off the Empire State Building and hitting the street below in less than 20 seconds. With the risk of death being 1 in every 2,300 jumps and injury being 1 in every 254 jumps, BASE jumping is even more risky than skydiving. Wingsuit jumpers know that planning and having a proven system in place prevents mistakes and is a necessary part of their safety precautions.

Similar principles hold true when youre deploying technology at multiple sites at an accelerated rate. The importance of speed and accuracy in completing your category 1 (one day or less) technology deployment are comparable to wingsuit BASE jumping. Without accuracy and a carefully calculated speed, a wingsuit jumper risks injury or death, just as the technology deployment may fall short of your expectations and you may suffer the injury of missed scheduled dates, revisits, unprofessional and unskilled technicians or the fatality of damaging your hard-earned reputation.

The Importance of a System
Just like a checklist for the wingsuit jumper of checking all straps and zippers, the Technology Rollout Company must follow its own checklist to ensure their processes for the category 1 rollout are most efficient. Below is a brief example of preparations the Technology Rollout Company must make to ensure various factors do not impact the technology rollout deployment at each site for an accelerated multi-site project.

Technology Deployment Preparation: Category 1

Day prior to technology deployment:

Email POC confirming scheduled appointment
Email or call local partner confirming that the tech(s) is scheduled and obtain the techs information
Confirm all materials and that the equipment is ready

Day of technology deployment utilizing the Direct Tech Communication Channel:

Confirm tech(s) is dispatched to site
Alert POC of arrival time of tech(s)
Monitor, support and manage tech(s) at site
Rate the techs performance for deployment (technical, professional, etc.)

Site POC acceptance
Audit order completion
Close out order

When searching for a Technology Rollout Company for your category 1 technology deployments, keep in mind the wingsuit jumper. The amount of time and effort that goes into a successful BASE jump and the considerations prior to the jump are comparable to the same level of effort that must be done before your accelerated technology rollout. The right preparations and planning for the rollout can avoid the injury or fatality that can happen to your project.

Communication Technology Impacts in the Workplace

February 17th, 2012

Communication Technology Impacts in the Workplace

Communication technology, like email and videoconferencing, has revolutionized the workplace. Electronic communication has changed even physical aspects of the workplace, from how your employer communicates with you, to how day-to-day workplace procedures operate.

Communication

Between cell phones and email, an employer has a way to contact employees at all times. An employer can also more easily send mass messages, whether about a new company policy or an upcoming meeting, with mass emails.

The Internet

The Internet has changed the workplace by making the computer a more universal business tool. All communications can be done with an Internet connection, from simply emailing your boss, to faxing important information to a partner company.

Marketing

Electronic communication has created new ways for a company to reach potential customers. For example, having a website and advertising online helps a company reach new customers.

Customer Service

Communication technology, especially a website, can be a great customer service tool. A website allows customers to obtain information at any time of day, any day of the week.

Liability

While electronic communication has many positive benefits on business, communication technology also creates possible liability issues for a company. For instance, the company could face some serious charges if an employee uses business email to send a joke, with racial undertones, to a friend.

Technology and the Capability to Watch Movies Online

February 17th, 2012

Technology and the Capability to Watch Movies Online

It’s a fact that today’s technology has made the world smaller, and there is much more accessibility to the things we want on demand. TV, for example, has changed so much in the last few years, that the industry is on par with information technology, with some set top boxes becoming obsolete after just a few months, with newer features being added – such as HD, storage space for recorded programs, and even gaming facilities. With that being said, the biggest industry in entertainment drives most of these technological changes, and those who want to watch movies online or on demand are catered for primarily, along with those who want to watch sports and sporting events.

Most of the people who watch movies online usually have access to the same movies on their TV package with cable or digital satellite, yet still prefer to watch movies online because of the options available. When you watch a movie on your set top box for example, you may be subject to a time limit to watch said movie, or you may only be able to get the movie to play in standard definition, but you really want to watch it in HD. Watching movies online enables you to choose from a myriad of viewing possibilities, and you can literally take your pick from some of the online providers.

For those wishing to explore the methods that enable them to watch movies online, they are often shocked that they can do so simply using their browser with the standard plugins and codes they already have on their computer when it is shipped from the vendor. For example, the codes (code/decode files that enable your browser or media player to play the files) required to watch file formats online are now included with Windows 7 and subsequent updates will most probably have this included too.

Whilst the world becomes smaller, and we are given access to this range of viewing capabilities, it is difficult to imagine life without this accessibility. We wish for more things on demand, and the most common problem people have with TV packages that include movies on demand, is that they do not have the amount of titles available as you would when you choose to watch movies online. There simply isn’t enough money in the pockets of the big TV companies to do so. Watching your favourite movies online is simpler, provides MORE choice, and is also more accessible. This is why it is usually the clear winner for the consumer.

How Changes in Technology Affect the Dissolving Pulp Industry

February 15th, 2012

How Changes in Technology Affect the Dissolving Pulp Industry

Dissolving pulp is bleached wood pulp with a high cellulose content. Bleaching the soft wood tissue removes or decreases the color of the pulp. The main use of the bleached wood tissue is to make paper. It is also used to make rayon materials that are in turn, used in the manufacturing of clothing items like jackets, shorts, shirts, and coats. In addition, rayon materials are used to make cellophane.

The decrease in the paper and print industry has been strongly influenced by the advent of the internet and technologies for mobile computing. The technologies that will strongly impact this industry, are e books, e commerce, digital archiving, and online news. People are increasing their use of these technologies daily, which will lead to a drastic decline in the use of paper. The increase in online technology will in turn decrease the demand for bleached pulp as well.

The medical community is a prime example of the decrease in paper and the dependence on computer technology for patient care. Patient files and laboratory testing orders are entered for each patient into a secured online database that is shared by the particular health care facility or hospital. Insurance and patient billing is also completed online. The decrease in the use of paper just among medical organizations is substantial.

Throughout the business world the move to switch from paper reports, files, and records, to the many software products available, has slowly but strongly influenced the viability of the paper producing industry. With the advances in technology that will help companies run their business more efficiently and cost effectively, the need for paper products could become almost non existent.

Companies will need to adapt to these changes in order to stay in business. The industry will need to investigate other opportunities for the use of the fibers that can be derived from the bleached wood tissue.

The switch from producing paper products, for instance, to the production of rayon will take advantage of the cotton industry which is currently struggling. The rayon substance is used in the clothing industry and its production will offer the opportunity to adapt to the changing industry.

Heavy rains, floods, and other restrictions, have caused a sharp decrease in cotton production which is increasing the demand for rayon. In some areas of Asia the market has grown by as much as ten percent annually. This is an indication that the dissolving pulp industry needs to explore alternative products to remain viable.

With the increase in technologies that are moving businesses away from the need for paper products, and the decrease in the output of cotton that is needed for clothing and other items, the dissolving pulp industry will be able to survive provided those who own the mills are able to adapt. While it may take the closing of a mill to make the necessary changes to adapt, the results of making the switch will help keep the industry alive by making the most of a changing situation.

The Economic Bonuses of Smart Grid Technology

February 15th, 2012

The Economic Bonuses of Smart Grid Technology

The bonuses of the smart grid to the environment are obvious. If the usage numbers are broken down to before and after smart grid, the benefits to consumers are just as obvious. What about the economic bonuses of smart grid technology? How does it benefit companies and consumers both financially?

The benefits of smart grid would include:

* The supply and demand management. Knowing when and where more energy will be needed and being able to meet that demand will be key to preventing waste. A rural electric company must boost energy amounts sent from the substation to make it all the way to outlying customers, leading to huge amounts of waste, especially if Farmer Johnson and his family have set up and kicked on a wind farm operation. Without this waste, energy generation and delivery would become far more efficient and cost effective.

* The multi-tiered energy program. Smart grid would allow for power charges to be at varying levels throughout the day. Instead of paying one, flat rate that may not be fair to all customers, a higher amount would be paid for energy usage during peak times and less for use when demand is not as great. Again, this would reduce wasted energy as well as create smarter consumers.

* Vehicle integration. Most people use their vehicles to get around during the day when power costs are higher and then charge them at night during off peak times. Integrating the vehicle to the smart grid would allow it to either charge during off peak times or at scheduled times. It would also allow it to give back energy to the grid at times.

* Consumer controls. Old meters only monitor how much energy has been sent into the home and may not reflect realistic usage at all. New meter types would not only allow for more accurate detailing of how much energy is being used, but in real time. Outdated and energy sucking appliances could then be replaced, because each consumer would be able to see how much they are actually costing to keep.

All of this means that the customers will get smart about how much energy is being used and where it is coming from, saving the utility company money. A lower need for new lines and wires will save additional money, as will reducing the need for more substations and electrical plants. Government grants and subsidies will offset some of the cost for the smart grid upgrades, but many questions still remain to be answered before they are universal or even nationwide.

How Laser Technology Improve Your Eyesight

February 15th, 2012

How Laser Technology Improve Your Eyesight

The advancement of technology in recent time has brought about many changes in the medical science field. A clear and simple example of such improved technology is laser eye surgery. Laser eye surgery is becoming a highly popular method of correcting eye problems. More and more people are going in for laser eye surgery all over the world, as it is considered to be safe and highly productive.

How exactly does the laser correct the vision problems? Through a laser vision apparatus and control method, short beams of invisible lasers take out minute tissue samples from the cornea to properly align the curvature. The tissue is so miniscule that it’s actually less thick than a strand of human hair. By removing this tissue, the retina is able to focus on the images better and so the images become clearer.

What are the types? There are generally two types: PRK or photorefractive keratectomy and Lasik or laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis. Under these umbrella terms, several other procedures are categorized. PRK is a procedure that uses an excimer laser that removes the outer layer of the cornea, which is then reshaped to correct the eye disorder. Lasik is another refractive procedure that uses a surgical instrument to create a flap under the cornea. This flap is then lifted after which the laser reshapes the cornea.

Who are good candidates for laser eye surgery? People over 21 years of age are good candidates for laser eye surgery. They must not have severe eye disorders such as glaucoma. A visit to an eye specialist can help the patient determine if this is the best way to correct your myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism.

How safe is the procedure? People all over the world have had laser vision correction surgery successfully performed on them. Laser surgery is very safe, takes less than ten minutes on the whole and patients may expect full recovery in a matter of days.

How much is laser eye surgery? The usual cost for it is about $1,500 dollars per eye. This covers pre-operative and post-operative visits as well.

The Latest In Call Center Technology

February 14th, 2012

The Latest In Call Center Technology

The most innovative and latest technology goes into the making of the modern call centers both outbound as well as inbound. The latest additions to the call center technology are automated call routers, call monitoring software, recording tools and customer database servers, telemarketing software and the like. Each of these technologies is state-of-the-art, latest and has made life a breeze for the executives working at these new work centers. It is only this zeal to be ahead of the technology curve that has led to the growth of call centers that are today mushrooming all over the world including the third world countries. Here are some detailed examples of call center technology that is prominently in use today:

-The automated call distribution software or ACD as it is popularly known, routes all incoming call traffic as per specifications fed to it. Allow us to explain what this means;

For instance a call center has different departments for customer support, technical support and sales. The automated software has instructions fed into it and it will redirect the calls directly to the assigned center. This saves a lot of time of other executives who can cater to the duties assigned to them without facing the hassles of manually redirecting calls to different centers.

-Next in line of call center technology is the Automated Dialer. This technology is in the form of software that dials numbers one after the other automatically without any human intervention. This saves a lot of time and human efforts. Moreover, it prevents errors and increases the overall efficiency. Also, most of these dialers come with a caller identification feature making routing of calls easier and also providing database functionality by storing the caller’s numbers.

-The third most important technology used in call centers is call recording systems. This technology is indeed a major breakthrough for this industry as it helps storing sensitive and confidential information given by callers in an “as is” manner for later reference.

-One of the oldest technologies used by call centers is the integrated voice response or the IVR. This system is a combination of hardware and software and it makes use of an automated voice system for executing customer interactions and is also capable of recording customer and prospect inputs. The inputs are recorded in the form of key presses by the customer on his or her own communication device such as a telephone or mobile phone.
