Using Technology as a Marketing Tool

Probably the greatest reason for the web becoming the main sales & marketing channel of the future will be due to the fact that the technology that gives the web its interactive nature can be used as a highly effective marketing tool

Modern marketing strategies are based on database analysis, profiling, targeting and relationship building. In other words finding out who your customers are; finding their needs and likes; and creating a database from this valuable information. You are then in a position to direct, highly targeted offers on a regular basis that they are most likely to respond to and thus building up a long term relationship. The web offers an unparalleled opportunity to do this and much, much more.

When someone visits your site, they bring with them certain information about themselves. From this information you can start to build a database. Using a special computer language known as javascript, it is possible to recognise that person when they return to your site and greet them with a personalised message.

This could simply be to welcome them by their name and direct them to parts of your site that have been updated since their last visit. Or it could be used as a sales tool to direct them to special offers they would be interested in, based on previous visits.

For instance, when someone comes back to your site a second time, you know they must be interested in what you are offering, so you could give them an extra incentive by giving a discount if they place an order there and then.

This type of targeting is used extensively in direct marketing; and allows you to offer the products your prospect is most likely to respond to. However, with the Internet it can be done automatically and to a far higher degree of sophistication. I am sure you can see the enormous possibilities of this. When you add to this the fact that purchasers spend more on their second and subsequent visits to a site than they do with their first visit, I am sure you can see the enormous possibilities.

The world wide web offers one of the greatest business opportunity of all time. By getting involved now, you will be able to learn the strategies and techniques that will bring unparalleled success to your business in the years ahead.

Technology Training on a Tight Budget Sharing is the Answer

As a recent recipient of a Promethean Activboard in my classroom, I was thrilled to have been selected. I felt sure that my class would benefit, but I was not encouraged when I found out that there was to be absolutely no training on the hardware or software. The district simply did not have the money for anything other than the activboard and the installation. I mistakenly assumed that some professional development would precede the installation. A one-hour preview during a day of workshops in the previous summer was all I had to go on.

The big day arrived, the board was mounted right on my whiteboard, leaving me with about a foot and a half of regular whiteboard space, and the technician left after a fifteen-minute briefing that took place in front of my students. Luckily they were taking rapid notes and we had spent a week or two searching the Internet for tutorials on how to use the software.

Atomiclearning.com was helpful, they had some free screencasts that showed us a few basic functions. We also took advantage of the website that was on the software disc, luckily, the Promethean people took pity on the many districts that are struggling to add technology on budgets that have little room for expensive training sessions. Teachertube.com also had videos posted by teachers who were willing to share their activboard successes. Without people taking the time to contribute their knowledge on the Internet, our class would have had a giant blank screen facing them all semester while they tried to take notes from the tiny whiteboard we had remaining.

It comes down to this, do not despair when technology is available and training is withheld. Take charge, allow your students to divide up in the problem and start surfing. There will always be people who are natural teachers and Googlevideo and Youtube contain many helpful how-to tutorials that can help teachers solve most technological problems. I have learned to podcast and vodcast, create wikis, screencasts, and movies from a few enthusiastic individuals that took a moment out of their day to record what they were doing in the classroom with technology.

Now, I use those same formats to create helpful videos and screencasts for my own students that have trouble with the technology we use in school. I do not have to teach the same concept over and over until they get it, I create once and post it on our class website for them to view and practice as many times as they need to. This has solved the multiple problems of where pupils should post and store their projects on the school server, how they should save their work, and how to use excel and word for specific functions. We also make screencasts and screenshots of our work on the Activboard for upcoming students. If you know how to do something with technology, take the time to share.

What Type of Job Can You Get with an Information Technology Degree

As our society becomes increasingly dependent on technology and the Internet, jobs in information technology are in high demand and have a high degree of job security and room for advancement.

Types

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that jobs in the information technology field are expected to increase faster than the average field. This is due in large part to the increased technology in use by nearly all companies. The broad term “information technology” encompasses several different career paths. These generally fall into four categories: computer science application, management, sales and customer service and support.

Computer Science Application

Of the various categories of information technology careers, the broadest is computer science application. One of the more difficult jobs in computer science application is that of a computer scientist. Computer scientists are those individuals charged with researching and inventing new technology. This may include work with robots, virtual reality design and a variety of other specialties. Other examples of jobs in computer science application include database administrators, software engineers, computer programmers and systems analysts.

Communications

Network architects, also known as data communications analysts, are responsible for creating and improving upon the technologies that help us connect with one another, such as local area networks and the Internet. These connections between computers and communications equipment are then installed and maintained by telecommunications specialists. These professionals keep our voice mail, email and other means of communication up and running.

Internet Development

As the Internet continues to grow and expand, allowing us to work, communicate and shop online, IT professionals are finding increasing opportunities for careers involving the Internet. Web designers, Internet developers and webmasters are just a few of the jobs available for professionals in this area. These jobs involve creating and maintaining all aspects of a working Web page.

Other Jobs

For individuals looking for an IT career that incorporates more social and interpersonal skills, there are careers available in sales, management and customer support. A common entry level job for IT professionals is customer support. This job requires patience and good communications skills for leading confused users through the process of setting up or fixing their computer or software. After working up from an entry level job, IT professionals with strong leadership skills may find that an IT management or project leader position suits them very well. Similarly, an IT degree paired with shrewd sales skills can lead to a sales position within a technology company.

Technology in Travel What About the Kids

Nowadays, theres a lot more to childrens travel-themed technology than your standard bikes or scooters. While its common to see kids still enjoying getting out and about on their push bikes and scooters, theres also far more choices for those who arent fans of these old classics. For example, there are now many motorised vehicles for kids that let them drive or scoot around safely, which can be a great way of getting them to go outside.

It can be difficult getting your kids to go out and exercise. When theres so many distractions, such as television, DVDs, video games and the internet that are predominately used indoors, getting kids to stop staring at screens and start playing in the sun can be a challenge. But with the temptation of a new toy, especially one that lets them move around quickly and in an exciting way, you could find that your children are rushing out of doors to play instead of heading for the TV.

There are so many great ways to get your kids active nowadays, especially when it comes to travel-themed toys. From classic old toy cars that let your kids drive using their feet to propel themselves forwards Flintstones style to new motorised cars that let them put the pedal to the metal, theres heaps to choose form. Why not teach your child to roller skate or roller blade and watch as they speed up and down the street or in the garden? Just remember to equip them with the appropriate safety gear and you can be sure that any injuries sustained from the usual bumps and tumbles will be easily dealt with.

Whatever type of travelling themed toys you decide to get your child this summer, whether its speedy bicycles and scooters or bouncy, but just as fun toys like pogo sticks and space hoppers, you can be sure that theyre the perfect way to get them outside and enjoying the fresh air. Whats more, with toys like these youll know that your child is getting important exercise that will help their physical development and turn them into stronger, happier kids. So whether its kids scooters or kids roller blades youre setting your sights on, you can be sure its going to be a good buy. And you might just find that you end up grabbing the adult version for yourself so you can spend more time outside having fun and bonding with your child!

Mobile Healthcare Technology Summit Brings Industry Leaders Together in Houston

Industry leaders fielded questions and provided valuable insights about the use of mobile technologies in Healthcare at the Houston Mobile Healthcare Technology Summit held on May 5, 2011 in Houston. The event was presented by Smith Seckman Reid, Inc. () at the University of Houston Alumni Center. Other local sponsors of the event included HIMSS South Central Texas Chapter (), the University of Houston (), and the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Rice University ().

The panel included Joyce Sensmeier, Vice President of Informatics for HIMSS; Roberk Sokol, CFO of INEOS Oligomers who served on the panel in the role of a patient advocate; Melita Howell, Application Architect for Clinical Information Systems at Texas Childrens Hospital; Michael Zachary, Director of Enterprise Architecture for Cook Childrens Healthcare System in Fort Worth; Pamela Redden, Director of Clinical Facilities Development for Clinical Operations at M. D. Anderson; Dr. Christopher Robben, a physician affiliated with Methodist Hospital; and Dr. Yadin David, President of Biomedical Engineering Consultants, LLC.

The esteemed panel recounted lessons learned and answered questions from over 150 attendees representing healthcare, information technology, communications, education, and an assortment of other industries. Some key points from the general discussion were:

1. Advances in mobile technology are happening at a rate faster than medical facilities, personnel, and work processes can safely incorporate.

2. As more mobile devices are added to healthcare environments, risk increases including risks to privacy, security, and quality of care.

3. A holistic approach is needed when introducing technology and information systems into healthcare organizations. Decisions made in silos without accounting for how they may impact the rest of the organization often have negative side effects.

4. The success of information technology projects increases when there is continuity among the members of the project team and strong leadership from the project manager.

5. Organizations must decide whether to provide employees with mobile devices vs. allowing them to use their personal mobile devices with which they are more comfortable and familiar. Factors affecting this decision include costs, compensation, and security.

6. As healthcare organizations introduce multiple technologies into their environments as part of integrated solutions, the healthcare organizations themselves become responsible for making sure that every part is working as it should.

7. Good downtime procedures are increasingly more important as we become more reliant on technology because nothing is 100% reliable. Not only is it important that downtime procedures are in place but also that all parties know how to execute the downtime procedures.

8. Infection control is a big concern among healthcare providers in the use of mobile technology. Moving devices throughout the healthcare organization without sterilization procedures can pose an infection risk. The industry is in need of good solutions to this problem.

Smith, Seckman, and Reid conducts Mobile Technology Summits in cities throughout the country. For more information on their next event please visit. .

How Technology and Conference Scheduling Software Are Changing the Meeting Room

Business has changed drastically in the last decade. Changes in the way corporations worked used to take five to ten years, now take one or two years. As technology moves faster, businesses are trying to keep up and adapt their work flow to the increasingly changing technology landscape. One of those changes is the globalization of the business world.

This change is becoming more and more true every day. We’re as affected by the business of the rest of the world as the rest of the world is on our business. So it is important to connect globally, but that means traversing time zones and international holidays. It’s a heck of a task, but it is far easier to do with recent development in scheduling software.

Some business calls just happen to require you to wake up at 4am, or maybe they just require you to stay up until 2am. Either way, it’s the cost of doing business on a global scale and it is a small price to pay. With business scheduling software, you can reach out to fellow business people and clients across space and time, literally. That 3pm meeting for you is a fellow in England’s 8pm meeting. It’s just the mind bending logistics of being an international company.

A meeting in Japan is an expensive undertaking isn’t it? No. It’s not. Haven’t you been listening? With conference scheduling software anything is possible. International comes to your office. Global becomes local. The outside comes inside and the possibilities are endless. Another great addition is the ability to perform video conference meetings. This feature enabled businesses to save millions in travel money, and still maintain that personal feel of a face to face meeting.

Video conferencing specifically allows us to feel like we are speaking to real people and not just some bodiless voice on the other end of a telephone. Gone are the days of taking a business call in your gym shorts, business attire is a must at least from the waist up.

Technology however, cannot replace your ability to communicate your ideas in those meetings. However, it can help to make sure that the people that are listening to you are in the right mindset. Avoiding scheduling mistakes and miss-communication by having a conference scheduling software, can help employees schedule their day better, and come prepared to hear your thoughts, ideas and suggestions. Technology has evolved. It is time to evolve the way your office works as well. Take a look at what these programs can offer to the specific demands of your office.

——

specializes in bringing clients conference scheduling software and business scheduling software for in person conferences as well as virtual conferencing.

Information Technology in the Airline Industry

While the U.S. airline industry was an early pioneer of information technology, it has struggled in the early 21st century to upgrade its antiquated technology systems to be more customer friendly, according to analyst firm Forrester Research. As of 2010, many of the major airlines were still using computer systems that were introduced in the 1960s.

History

In the 1960s, the U.S. airline industry created computerized systems for making airline reservations. This technology was developed to meet the needs of airline employees instead of customers. According to the “New York Times,” financial difficulties have prevented the airlines from upgrading to the newest, most modern technologies available.

Innovations

One of the airline industry’s most significant IT innovations was the introduction of electronic tickets, replacing the paper tickets with magnetic strips. This saved airlines about $3 billion per year, according to the International Air Transport Association.

Challenges

When Delta acquired Northwest Airlines in 2008, it took about two years to merge the two airlines’ reservation and technology systems, which involved some 1,200 computer applications.

Spending

According to SITA, an airline industry analyst firm, the airlines spent just 1.7 percent of their total revenue on information technology, compared to typical expenditures of between 2.5 percent to 3.5 percent by other industries.

Technology Insight Report Aerogels

Material sciences and technology have given us innovations ranging from silicon, polymers, float glass, carbon fiber, ceramics, optic fiber and so much more which has become a part of the world we live in. Nearly every discovery or innovation around a breakthrough material is usually followed by a big impact in the way things are made and the way we live. The invention of Aerogels although still relatively a recent innovation, with its unique properties is one that has so much future potential applications. With researchers and scientists still making incremental innovations around this fascinating new material, we thought it would be great to get some insights into the patent landscape of Aerogels and explore the promises it holds.

Overview

Introduction to Aerogels

Aerogel is a manufactured material with the lowest bulk density of any known porous solid. It is derived from a gel in which the liquid component of the gel has been replaced with a gas. The result is an extremely low-density solid with several remarkable properties, most notably its effectiveness as a thermal insulator. It is nicknamed frozen smoke, solid smoke, solid air or blue smoke due to its translucent nature and the way light scatters in the material; however, it feels like expanded polystyrene (styrofoam) to the touch.

The Market for Aerogels

With its unique properties of being extremely lightweight, a great thermal insulator and given the vast applications already discovered for this material type, the potential markets for aerogels look promising. According to Electronics.ca research network, the market for aerogels by 2013 is estimated to be $646.3 million with a compound annual growth rate of 50.8%.

Importance of Emerging Technology

From the automobile to the computer, the light bulb to the micro-chip, the emergency of new technology has been the story of human development over the past 150 years. And with the current challenges, such as how to slow global warming, feed a rapidly expanding population, and cure disease, the technology just beginning to emerge is more crucial than ever.

Renewable Energy

Some experts think global oil production will peak within the next two decades, leading to massive economic shocks and skyrocketing energy prices. Similarly, climate scientists have predicted that global warming could radically alter the habitability of the planet. Renewable energy sources may help to change that. These include wind, solar, biofuel, geothermal, and tidal.

Biotechnology

With the human genome having been fully sequenced and procedures such as somatic cell transfer perfected, bio-engineering promises to play an increasingly important role in daily life. Some possibilities include tissue and organ banks comparable to today’s blood banks, genetically modified bacteria that consume environmental waste, and gene therapy to cure inherited diseases and enhance quality of life.

Quantum Computing

With the volume of Internet traffic threatening to exceed the current system’s design capabilities, computer experts are pointing to new technologies such as quantum processing, which could enable lightning-fast peer-to-peer networks to take the place of traditional servers. Such networks could stream high definition video games with lifelike avatars, predict the weather weeks in advance and maximize energy efficiency through the allocation of smart power.

Nanotechnology

Computers are usually thought of as machines built for use on a human scale, but nanobots are sophisticated machines that are smaller than the width of a human hair. As nanotechnology improves, its impact will be felt in a variety of fields. These might include cancer-destroying molecules, clothing that adapts to its environment and strong, flexible materials for buildings and vehicles.

Space Travel

Changes in the ability of human beings to travel through outer space and adapt extra-terrestrial resources for human needs are among the most difficult to predict because they depend less on advancing knowledge than on political, social and economic factors. If human beings do continue the exploration of space, they will likely rely on new technology such as ion propulsion, antimatter rockets and nuclear fusion.
